Light Up The Flag
For Georgians, Independence Day is more than a holiday - it’s a bittersweet celebration of perseverance, sacrifice, and unity. The whole country is wrapped in red and white, with our flag proudly waving from balconies, streets, and shoulders as the ultimate expression of national pride. But for the millions of Georgians living abroad, that moment can feel distant.
That’s where Bank of Georgia stepped in - with a vision to make them feel seen, remembered, and included. Together, we created an interactive platform where every Georgian abroad could participate in lighting up a massive digital flag displayed on the main screen of the capital in front of the Tbilisi Philharmonic Hall. As 63,622 Georgians participated from around the world, the flag came to life, one emigrant at a time.

Challenge
For approximately 1.7 million Georgians living abroad, who are significant contributors to the nation’s economy and culture in countless ways, major national holidays like Independence Day pass with nostalgia and silence. While the country celebrates in full colour, those far from home often go unseen in the crowd.
So, Bank of Georgia challenged us to solve this: how can we make emigrants feel truly seen, included, and connected to Georgia’s biggest national celebration? We needed to design a campaign that was not just symbolic, but emotionally resonant - something that could invite real engagement and give emigrants a visible, meaningful role in the festivities.
Solution
We turned a symbolic act - raising the flag - into a digital ritual. On the platform, Georgian emigrants were invited to “light up the flag” by filling out a short form with their name and location. Each submission lit up one pixel of a massive LED screen in front of the Tbilisi Philharmonic Hall. Slowly, and with every entry, the Georgian flag began to form, becoming a shared monument to unity, written across time zones and borders. Emigrants had found their role in waving a digital national flag with us in the heart of our capital.
Platform for Emigrants
The campaign’s heart was the emigrant-facing platform. It was designed as a simple, emotional, and universally accessible experience for Georgian emigrants. Once on the platform, users could easily submit their name and current country of residence - no logins, no complications. The interface was built mobile-first, optimized for all ages and tech proficiencies, ensuring no one was left out. Most importantly, it gave thousands of Georgians living abroad a chance to take action and feel symbolically present in the country they still call home.
Live LED Screen Activation
Every submission from the platform instantly lit up one pixel on Georgia’s largest LED screen in front of the Tbilisi Philharmonic Hall. Pixel by pixel, a massive dotted Georgian flag took shape in the heart of the capital - each light a gesture of pride from somewhere far away. It became the emotional centerpiece of the campaign: a visual proof of collective belonging, as thousands of small contributions formed one powerful, unified whole.
Platform for Locals
The platform used IP-based logic to display a separate experience for users accessing the platform from within Georgia. Instead of a submission form, they were shown real-time data on how many Georgian Emigrants had participated and how the flag looked outside the Hall. This dual-interface approach ensured both audiences could meaningfully engage with the campaign, while locals witnessed the scale and impact of the global Georgian community.
Effortless Scalability with Laravel Cloud
Given the nature of the campaign - tens of thousands of Georgian emigrants visiting the platform within a very short timeframe - we needed a hosting solution that could scale instantly, handle traffic surges effortlessly, and be quick to set up. With only two weeks to launch, Laravel Cloud was the perfect choice. It allowed us to deploy the platform with easily scalable resources and database infrastructure, ensuring that every visitor, from Toronto to Wellington, could light up their pixel on the Georgian flag in real time. The setup was seamless, the experience was fast and reliable, and not a single interaction was missed.

Creative Idea & Strategy
The brief’s challenge was clear: go beyond a simple “Happy Independence Day” message for those who’ve spent years celebrating it from afar. How do we make Georgian emigrants feel truly seen and connected on a day that carries such weight for every Georgian?
Through research and conversation, we uncovered a powerful emotional insight: although Georgian emigrants stay connected to home - keeping up with news, calling their families, rooting for the country - they often perceive themselves as outside the core of Georgia’s identity. All the while, these are the ones whose roots, though replanted far away, still reach back home. So we knew this campaign had to do more than acknowledge them - it needed to include them, especially on a day symbolising national unity.
And what better symbol of that unity than the Georgian flag? On May 26th, it’s everywhere: hanging from balconies, draped over shoulders, flying from car windows. Waving the flag is how people in Georgia take pride in their country. So, we asked: what if emigrants could wave the flag with us - from wherever they are in the world? That single question became the spark for our entire campaign mechanism. Through a digital platform, each emigrant could light up one pixel of a massive Georgian flag displayed in the heart of Tbilisi. Bit by bit, gesture by gesture, their collective contributions would light up the entire flag, turning distance into presence, and remembrance into participation.
Based on the campaign's mechanism, the tagline was "History of Georgia is written from every corner of the world" - a powerful invitation for emigrants not just to celebrate but to take part in writing that story.
Visual Identity & Graphic Design
At the heart of the campaign was a powerful question: how do you visually express national unity built from afar? The answer became our art direction. Since each Georgian abroad would light up one pixel of the flag, the design needed to reflect that idea - every contribution mattered, and every dot had a place. That’s how we arrived at the dotted Georgian flag: thousands of scattered red pixels coming together to form a unified whole.
Just like the campaign, the flag’s composition symbolizes presence through participation - each speck a story, each dot a Georgian living abroad. The surrounding elements were kept minimal, giving full focus to the flag as both visual anchor and emotional centerpiece. The custom typography and minimalist layouts were chosen to maintain clarity, impact, and emotional weight, allowing the message and metaphor to take center stage in every execution.
In the end, the visual system became a poetic embodiment of the campaign’s core idea.
UI/UX Design
Inspired by the creative direction of Bank of Georgia’s Independence Day campaign, we designed a platform that visually captured the emotional weight of the initiative while maintaining clear functionality. The site evolved over three key stages - pre-campaign, live campaign, and post-campaign - each with tailored visual narratives and user flows. Depending on whether a visitor was a local or an emigrant, the interface dynamically adjusted to provide relevant content and interactions.
Accessibility was at the core of our design process. We followed a mobile-first approach to ensure the experience was seamless across devices, with a special focus on simplicity and intuitiveness for users of all ages and tech literacy levels. The end result was a frictionless, emotionally resonant platform that remained clear and engaging across every interaction point.
Backend Development
To meet the tight two-week deadline, we relied on Laravel for its “batteries-included” capabilities and rapid feature delivery. On top of this foundation, we integrated Filament for the admin panel, enabling us to quickly build a robust backend interface complete with role-based access control, content moderation tools, and submission management for campaign entries.
Real-time functionality was critical for delivering the pixel-lighting experience. We used Laravel's native broadcasting and queue systems, combined with Pusher, to handle submissions and trigger pixel animations live on the display. For smooth frontend-backend communication, we used Inertia.js, allowing us to integrate a reactive frontend without the complexity of building a full-blown API layer.
This stack gave us the flexibility to prioritize business logic while ensuring the system was reliable, scalable, and easy to maintain under heavy traffic loads.
Frontend Development
We built the frontend with React to give us the agility and reactivity needed for a location-aware, time-sensitive platform. Based on user location, submission status, and the campaign’s timeline, the interface dynamically updated to show the appropriate screen - whether that meant a live counter, an entry form, or a final message of thanks.
We used Inertia.js to seamlessly connect the frontend to the Laravel backend, enabling fast development without compromising on UX. Real-time interactivity - such as watching the flag fill up pixel by pixel - was achieved using Pusher and Laravel Echo. The pixel animation was hand-crafted using native Canvas and Blob APIs: we programmatically mapped colored pixels, replaced them with white, and gradually “lit them up” red upon each user submission.
For styling, we used TailwindCSS, which allowed us to quickly implement a clean, consistent design system that matched the campaign’s creative direction - all within our condensed timeline.
